Weekend Workshop

During this workshop we will work with natural forms as our inspiration to create colourful and appealing paintings.

The first day will be spent creating layered underpaintings to generate interesting backdrops for the nature subjects of your choice. To keep the pace engaging, multiple pieces of paper will be painted in rotation. Students will be given fun exercises to try, and encouraged to discover inventive approaches to applying textures and fluid watercolour grounds.

Mark making will be explored using a variety of techniques and tools and important watercolour techniques such as washes, glazing and wet into wet will be put into practice throughout the weekend. To create more visual interest, we will delve into using resists such as masking fluid and water repelling mediums.

During the second day, we will concentrated of transferring the nature image of your choice to one of the underpaintings and apply traditional watercolour methods to render the subject. To create colour harmony in your work, the tutor will discuss and demonstrate the benefits of working with a limited palette of colours.

Throughout the workshop, Sharon provides informative demonstrations and supportive instruction to guide the whole group, as well as attending to each individual on a one-to-one basis.

This workshop will help you gain skills and confidence in your approach to combining free form grounds with detailed observational painting.

Intermediate and beginner students are welcome to participate.
