Sharon teaching a watercolour workshop at Byron School of Art

Teaching Philosophy

With more than thirty years of experience as an artist and educator, I have developed my own approach of teaching that inspires, empowers and includes a lot of fun in the learning process.

Teaching watercolour is my main speciality, however, I teach an array of subjects, including drawing, colour theory and artist book construction.

I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills, and believe we are all innately creative, curious and capable when given the right kind of environment to flourish in.

My workshops keep on evolving as I make new discoveries. I hope to see you in one of my workshops soon.

I have taught widely as a freelance art teacher, travelling to workshops throughout Australia, including touring outback QLD and NSW for three years as part of the Flying Arts Team. I hold workshops in Mullumbimby and beyond, as well as teaching weekend workshops at Byron School of Art (BSA).

What my students say…

  • This was a most informative workshop and it was delivered in a well- balanced manner that allowed time for it all to be taken in. The concepts and the skills were exciting and great fun to implement. One of the best workshops I’ve participated in. You are to be congratulated on your teaching and artistic skills.

  • An Inspiring course. Great balance of demonstrations and time for own work. Excellent range of techniques taught. Plenty of opportunity to work on own ideas. Everyone was encouraged whether they were beginners or more experienced. Very helpful constructive criticism. I highly recommend anyone interested in watercolour to do a course with Sharon.

  • Sharon’s watercolour workshop totally surpassed all my expectations! I had never used watercolour prior to the workshop and I found the course the most wonderful introduction. Sharon keeps it fun and light hearted, so you can feel at ease tackling quite a challenging medium.

  • What an amazing workshop, thank you Sharon. I’ve loved your enthusiasm and energy with which you shared your abundant knowledge and artistic experience. I’ll be starting a studio workbook (instead of painting colour swatches on random paper). Thank you for your inspiration.

  • While living in the Northern Rivers I attended Sharon’s weekend class for a year. Through Sharon, I learnt to value my own visual language and mark making. She was so encouraging of the individual journey and the importance of telling one’s own stories through art making. Her depth of knowledge regarding process and materials is so vast, that today 8 years on, Sharon is still my go to mentor when I want to understand a process or materials. I gained the confidence to successfully apply to the National Art School through Sharon's encouragement.
