My Process
My work starts with pouring or brushing watercolour onto the paper and allowing the watercolour to make its own mark. Then the dance begins between what is on the paper and elements that I choose to add. I have an affinity with the sensuous fluid nature of watercolour, which is a seductive medium that blends, swirls and flows. It has a mind of its own, which delights and challenges me in equal measure.
Once the watercolour has left its mark on the paper, I lay down textural and colourful grounds that evolve naturally with play. I have learnt to take risks, to experiment and push the boundaries of traditional watercolour techniques, especially in this early phase of making a work.
Colour is a major part of my artmaking, as working with colour is my intoxicating pleasure. Each work inspires its own individual colour combination, and the colours I choose can be soft and subtle or bold and strong, as I work within a broad palette. It’s the emotive qualities of colour that I seek and how I can paint with colour in an exciting, yet nuanced way.
The natural forms I depict are simplified and slightly abstracted, which is my way of integrating shapes and patterns within the grounds. It takes time to make my artworks, as I need to allow ideas to incubate and to let the paintings speak and emerge of their own accord.
Ultimately, I work with what I find interesting and invigorating to me.
My art practice is a way to share what I have seen in the natural world, combined with what I feel about what I have seen.
